What is a pillow box?

A distinctive carton with instant visual appeal

A pillow box is a folding carton style characterised by its curved, pillow-like shape. Rather than the square or rectangular profile of most carton styles, a pillow box has gently curved sides that give it a rounded, three-dimensional appearance when assembled.

The construction is straightforward: the carton folds from a single piece of board, with the curved sides formed by the shape of the die cut. It's easy to assemble and opens at both ends with a tuck.

Where are pillow boxes used?

Wherever presentation and gifting quality matter

Pillow boxes are most commonly used where the packaging is part of the product experience. Common uses include:

  • Gift packaging (jewellery, accessories, luxury items)

  • Cosmetics and fragrance

  • Confectionery and specialty food

  • Promotional packaging

  • Retail boutique and premium direct-to-consumer products

Their shape makes them hard to overlook on a shelf or inside a gift bag, and they work well as a standalone presentation format without needing additional outer packaging.

Why choose a pillow box?

Premium presentation from a simple construction

The pillow box achieves something that's harder to pull off with standard carton shapes: it looks expensive without necessarily costing significantly more. The curved form creates a premium, gift-like impression that suits brands wanting to present their product well without commissioning a fully bespoke rigid box.

They're also quick and easy to assemble, which makes them practical for small-batch fulfilment, market stalls, and pop-up retail, as well as higher-volume production.

Because we print and finish them in-house digitally, you can run small quantities, update artwork freely, and add embellishments that reinforce the premium positioning.

Printing and finishing

Embellishments that make the most of the format

The curved surface of a pillow box responds well to embellishment. Hot foil catches the light differently on a curved surface than on a flat one, which can add real visual depth to a design. Embossing and debossing work well too, and soft touch laminate is a popular choice for a finish that feels as good as it looks.

All finishing is carried out in-house at our Bourne factory:

  • Hot foil stamping in metallic, day-glo, and holographic finishes

  • Cold foiling with per-SKU design variation

  • Embossing and debossing

  • Screen printing

  • Digital varnish

  • Overlaminates in gloss, matt, or soft touch

In summary

Simple to produce, hard to ignore

Pillow boxes offer one of the most effective routes to premium-feeling packaging without the cost and lead time of rigid box manufacturing. If you have a product that benefits from a more considered, gift-like presentation, we'd be happy to explore what's possible.
